THE MEXTROPOLI CUT-OUT SET
urban device for adaptable public space

THE MEXTROPOLI CUT-OUT SET
urban device for adaptable public space | Ciudad de México, Mexico | 2015
third place
#publicspace #flexibility #multipleuse #events
The Mextrópoli Pavillion cut-out set is an urban device, a set of elements that freely arranged in the city creates recognizable places where relations and encounters are favored. The space generated by the Mextrópoli Pavillion cut-out set is an always different public space, defined by how each urban actor interprets the elements and interacts with them. The cut-out set designed for this pavilion, refers to the idea of a public space where people are encouraged and invited to interact in a playful and recreational way, as if the elements where hand built paper toys, for a more familiar and social relation with the contemporary city.
+
The Mextrópoli cut-out set provides five simple elements, five archetypes of urban space: the steps, to sit on, to climb and look from above for a different perspective; the gate, a threshold to cross to enter a different space, a structure to frame a particular view or a backdrop for an activity; the slide, to climb, to lie on, to roll on; the porch, a place to enter, a kiosk (an exhibition area, bar, shop, entrusted to someone it can generate an income to cover the costs of construction and maintenance); the podium, a clearly identified space, a carpet, a play field, base for activities. The objects can be assembled and reorganized in countless configurations, infinite possible landscapes that will generate spaces always new and suitable for different places and needs. This spatial image corresponds to our idea of public space: simple, adaptable and recognizable, theater of the encounter and discussion between the different actors the operate in the urban space.

MARKETHALL
outdoor exhibition at MAXXI for YAP2015

MARKETHALL
outdoor installation at MAXXI | Roma | 2015
finalist for YAP Young Architect Program
#publicspace #temporary #markethall #conviviality
MARKETHALL re-interprets the space and sense of the market, considered as the oldest form of public space, place of commercial and cultural exchange. It is also symbol of flexible space, characterized by a great ability to adapt to the changing of times, trends and consumption, in a perfect synthesis between tradition and modernity.
MARKETHALL is a covering, a strong and clearly identifiable element, capable of quickly entering the urban imagination and creating a well-defined space through its shadow. Underneath it, the space is populated with objects which allow, trough their different possibility of use, to experience the place in many different ways.
MARKETHALL offers important opportunities for redefining the museum institution as a real urban public space, a contemporary forum creator of social and cultural production.

VIGNA VELATA
temporary garden in Cascina Langa

VIGNA VELATA
temporary garden in Cascina Langa | Trezzo Tinella (CN) | 2014
#event #landscape #wine #temporarysetting
The Vigna Velata is a space of discovery: a mysterious, ambiguous and mutable space into which let yourself go, and get lost in a delicious state of inebriation, to discover a deeper relationship with the genius loci.
The landscape of the Langhe is strongly characterized by the smooth and flowing lines of the hills, curves drawn by the vineyards and rows of fruit trees. An exceptional landscape for its morphology and its material aspect that can be fully appreciate in all its nuances from Cascina Langa.
+
The Vigna Velata reinterprets the topos of the vineyard and its constructive elements, purposing these ephemeral rows composed by the overlaying of soft drapes that frame the landscape of the Langhe. Walking along the rows, abandoning yourself and getting lost in this place, you can make multi-sensory experiences that will contribute to the personal construction of the territorial identity.
The observer that enters in the Vigna Velata will be invited to take a journey, accompanied by sounds, perfumes and tastes to be discover and unveiled along a perception path that mixes the topic elements of the territory with elements of imaginary, merging them into a delicious inebriation. A journey where to discover the symbols and memories of the sacred brotherhood with the earth and with the environment. A journey in which to reach the awareness of belonging to a single living entity, to live, to discover and to preserve.

ORDINARIO/STRAORDINARIO
temporary installation in a parking lot

ORDINARIO/STRAORDINARIO
temporary installation in a parking lot | Pastificio Cerere, Roma | 2014
#temporarysetting #parkinglot #sign #landscape
ORDINARIO/STRAORDINARIO is an installation created for the Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, as part of the Pastificio_ARCH project, in occasion of the event Open House Rome 2014.
The project aims to stimulate the production of new imaginaries for ordinary places: a large illuminated sign lights up over a fragment of landscape, drawing attention to the transformation potential of one of the many invisible spaces that are part of urban everyday life, such as the space of the parking lot.
Through the installation, the visitor is stimulated to look beyond and understand that the spaces that have to be reclaimed are before his eyes. The challenge is therefore to point out the existence of this space, transforming it into an extraordinary place – that means out of the ordinary – showing how a surface usually occupied only by cars, with few elements, can become something very different.
+
The installation is composed of two main elements: a base of a variety of plants, representing the landscape to be transformed, and a luminous sign, that plays between the opposing sense of the words ordinary and extraordinary, suggesting the imagination of new realities.
The sign, intentionally oversized, lights up to draw attention to the transformation potential of the space. Thirteen letters, on three lines, make up the sign STRA-ORDINARIO. Once on, the word “ordinary” is fixed, while the first row (“stra”) is intermittent, with a disturbing / vibrating effect, so to suggest, without asserting, the imagination of new realities.
The big illuminated sign is mounted on a fragment of landscape, a natural landscape that is often lacking in our cities. The species chosen, all resistant and rustic, create a varied landscape, for colors and perfumes. A light and mobile landscape, which vibrates with the wind, also communicating the image of a place that is not static, but in constant motion.

THYRUS
installation in Piazza della Repubblica

THYRUS
installation in Piazza della Repubblica | Terni | 2013
#temporarysetting #landscape #urbansquare #playground
Thyrus is the temporary installation purposed in occasion of FestArchLab 2013, an architecture festival with theme “Architecture: between real and virtual”. Thyrus is meant to answer to the needs of setting up the main square of the city, Piazza della Repubblica, to host a series of lectures and creating a place to stay and rest.
+
The area of intervention is a strongly characterized place, well rooted and inserted in the urban imagination; but, despite being the central square of the city, it is a place that is commonly perceived as passing through. The challenge is to break this consolidated imagination, and therefore the normal use of the square, and to make the space a place to stay. This is possible by working on the distortion of the meaning of space, through the insertion of unusual elements that allow a change of point of view and the way the space is used.
Thyrus was born following a local legend. Thyrus is the dragon represented in the coat of arms of the city of Terni that, according to the legend, spreading terror, forced all the inhabitants to live closed up in their homes. Until one day, a brave young man decides to face the dragon. After a long battle, when the young man was about to be defeated, a ray of sun hit his shiny armor: the dragon falters frightened from the reflection of his own image and is therefore defeated.
Today Thyrus is a long continuous seat that makes its way in the square between fixed artificial (a circular podium) and natural (two soft green hills) elements, placed in relation to the texture of the pavement, making Piazza della Repubblica unexpected and surprising. In the new temporary landscape, the long mobile seat, which can take different configurations according to needs, is the dragon to be tamed. Thyrus becomes the symbol of the possibility for citizens to reclaim and live freely in the public space.

PICK&EAT
temporary km0 garden

PICK&EAT
temporary km0 garden | Giardini delle Serre – Villa Reale, Monza | 2012
#eatingtogether #vegetablegarden #conviviality #food #ecology
Sitting around the table is a social ritual: in everyday life this action is related to the preparation and consumption of food, but also to conviviality and meeting time. Especially on holidays, when different people and personalities get together around the table, it is possible to generate unexpected synergies. Through the smells and the colors of the food, the noise of chatter and cutlery, the tactile sensation of different materials and different flavors, the five senses are continually challenged and put in interaction with each other, imprinting memories and feelings that will persist over time.
Pick & Eat activates a zero kilometer conviviality: around the central table you can sit, shop, meet and discuss while you’re eating the fruits and vegetables from among those planted in the garden behind you. Pick & Eat is made of waste materials from the industrial production, economic, ecological and recyclable.
So what are you waiting for? Tutti a tavola!

SALVINO CAMPOS. OSCAR NIEMEYER. ARCHITETTURA, CITTÀ E PAESAGGIO
photo exhibition set-up and graphic design | Facoltà di Architettura Roma Tre – Ex-Mattatoio and Ambasciata del Brasile in Italia – Palazzo Pamphilj | Roma, Italia
for FotoGrafia – Festival Internazionale di Roma
#exhibition #set-up #graphicdesign

The installation aims to draw the attention of the user on the theme of awareness of individual choices and responsibilities in formation and constitution of the environment, meant as a combination of physical and social space. The research for new ways of planning and managing urban transformations is a process necessarily multidisciplinary and multiscale: landscape, architecture, economy, art, ecology, philosophy, biology, sociology, computer science, etc. must be borrowed to interpret, represent and plan the complexity of urban dynamics at different scales, from the city to the single artistic intervention.
